FAIRBANKS JUNE 29

On our way to Fairbanks on the Parks Highway
Smoke fills the air as we travel north

Coming into Denali City - bridge to left for bike and pedestrian
passage over the Nenana River
Rubber slide to put Rafts into the Nenana River
kinda scary River rafting-nope don't wanna go down
besides, the water is really, really muddy

Smoke coming over the mountain mixed into the clouds.

There are such things as Iceworms...yes there are.

 Smoky Haze getting closer

Oh yeah..sure..you'll get bounced right off the road!
Road Construction...and we can go 55 in a work zone!
Here ya go--32 acres and 2 two cabins  $600K
Aren't we on the wrong side?
Nope...it's a zigzag route..got it
YUCK!
Better Yuck!

Holy Cow..big hole in the road
If this isn't the road, we're all making it one.

 Line up

Is this all the way to Fairbanks?
OK, we're next...
NOT driving through that-gotta, it's the only way.

We're done-hit it!
OH NO!
Must not be so bad..we can go 65 in a work zone.

The bridge over the Nenana River
Wildfire warning (no kidding) OH SH...
Bridge over Tanana River at Nenana

We're going single file, following a lead car...
FireFighters on ATV's and helicopters carrying water buckets
flying overhead-speck on picture just above pines.
Burn Damage

 Burned area
Smoke so bad, needed a Pilot car to take us through

 Fairbanks
University of Alaska through the smoke haze

Got to our campsite and started touring the city
First stop was the Pioneer Park
During urban renewal in the 60's, the city moved  many
historic buildings to the park; and, this sternwheeler.
They also have a narrow-gauge train going around the park.

Buzz, we know you love boats...
no more pictures.
 University of Alaska Fairbanks
UAF has unique architectural buildings
Built into the side of the mountain
overlooking the valley and Fairbanks below
Beautiful Campus

 History Museum
Smoke clearing in the valley a little
Old blockhouse from the 1740's, preserved

 University farm with Caribou

Wanted to show-sun still up at 11pm
and actually the first time we've even seen a sunset
since we've arrived. We're  199  miles from the Arctic Circle!
