At Glennallen, we could drive to Anchorage on the Glenn Highway or drive to Valdez.
So, since we are so close, Valdez here we come. We are taking the Richardson Highway, Alaska's first highway,1898 gold rush trail, upgraded wagon trail 1910, paved in 1957, that connects Fairbanks and Valdez. A good road, but we drove slow, 40mph. Beautiful scenery! About 120 miles to Valdez.
Alaska Pipeline 800 miles from Prudhoe Bay to Valdez
Still Permafrost humps in the road
3 days of travel on Rollercoaster is quite enough
Pipeline
Lots of bikers making this run
Lowe River
Still lots of curves
Going up and over
Worthington Glacier
Lots of snow
Drive in/ walk to glacier
Waterfalls
Still frozen lake
Here we are
Bundled up--cold here
Blue color of the ice--the weight of the ice squeezed out the air
and the refracted light is blue
Up we go, over the pass
Thompson Pass
Down we go
What a view!
VALDEZ
Eagles Rest RV Park view out of our rig
Not very full on our arrival; but, quickly filled
Here we are in the valley with mountains all around--Alaska!
Glad we took the time to go to Valdez--beautiful!
Tomorrow: Glacier cruise on the LULU BELLE 75' Motor yacht
