HOME

Beautiful windy day as we head south 

on I 95 to Tequesta. 

Opening the door of our place was a welcome 

sight.  We were home, off the road. 

  Over 16,000 miles traveled ..... 

A TRIP OF A LIFETIME!

Heading south on I 95, through Georgia, into Florida.

One of the few times we decided to call ahead for a

camping spot.  We called several places, both State Parks 

and private campgrounds---all were full.  Except,

Gamble Rogers State Park, with only a few spots left.

So, we gave them our name and asked to hold it for us.

What luck!  Not only did we have a spot, but right on the 

beach on the Atlantic Ocean  One of the nicest spots

 we stayed in and only $14.

GEORGIA SEPTEMBER 17

We camped at Medoc Mountain State Park,

North Carolina. The park was a little way off I 95-

beautiful, secluded campground and we were the only

campers there in a 3,000 acre park.  There

was no place to register--after 5 and closed.

Darkness surrounded us quickly back in the woods--

kind of spooky.... Forest sounds--insects, birds,

and other crawlies... Black-no stars, no moon--

couldn't see a thing.  Lights--a truck--a knock at the

door--a ranger checking on us.  OK  This would have been

a great park to explore, but we have miles to go.

I 95 through North Carolina, South Carolina and 

to Savannah, Georgia and Tybee Island.

 Took a shortcut, Hwy 17 off I 95, taking The 

Talmadge Memorial Bridge over the Savannah River

 Beautiful, historic Savannah, with it's Spanish moss

draped oak trees and  historic buildings.
 It is a city to explore.

 The drive along Bay St. with the old buildings 

housing many interesting shops.

Since we explored Savannah on another trip,

 we opted to stay out on Savannah's beach--

Tybee Island.

Found a spot away from everyone and settled in.

Tybee Island Light Station and Museum

Tybee Island's strategic position near the

 mouth of the Savannah River has made the island's

 northern tip the ideal location for a lighthouse.  First built in

 1736, the tallest structure in America at that time, rebuilt 

many times to the present structure circa 1867.

Toured the town--small and resorty

Wonderful beach on the Atlantic--windy this

evening and the surf was rollin'.

Cecil Day opened the first Days Inn on Tybee Island

in 1970.

Decided to go out to dinner at a local eatery, 

MacElwee's Seafood House.
